Buried Alive: Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Akotiri. Everyone has heard of Pompeii, buried in volcanic layers 82 feet deep after the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, five miles away, on the afternoon of 24th of August, 79 A.D. Lesser-known is Herculaneum, which was covered with lava leaving the town more or less intact. Even lesser known is Akrotiri, on the island of Santorini, which was covered in ash in 1615 B.C.
All three were destroyed by volcanic eruptions, but that’s where the similarities stop. All three were very different, and that will be discussed in the March 4, 2019 presentation by Bill Vossler and his wife Nikki Rajala, along with high-resolution color photos.
